The Totem 01 is one of our most unique sculptural objects. Like many goons pieces, it was inspired by the organic, accidental geometry that is a result of the constructive process. After making many angled legs for a commissioned couch, we stacked them on a table awaiting assembly. The alternating pattern created a zigzag shape, and we immediately dubbed it a “totem,” an architectural tectonic term related to stacking objects. The totem was our first exploration into the idea of having art podiums in a house. Due to our background in exhibition work, we had built many displays for art and sculpture, but wanted to develop a series that allowed people to curate their homes in a similar manner. The Totem is often bought in sets of two or more, as the repetition of angles leads to a particularly interesting geometry for stacking and grouping. Also available in gray wash.
